Intuitive Abstract Art

Some Things Are Better Felt Than Explained.

Sometimes you know exactly how you feel but have no idea how to describe it — like a song that puts you back in a particular room, remembering a relationship that changed the trajectory of your life, or the version of yourself you are finally becoming after a significant job or relationship ends. Maybe it’s how you felt after a move, a loss, or whatever came along and rearranged you.

These are the things I like to paint.

I’m an intuitive abstract artist, and I feel my way into a piece. Sometimes the starting point is music. Sometimes it’s a memory, a person, a dream, or something you are trying to make sense of. From there, I choose color, texture, movement, and shape.

I don’t always know what a painting will look like when I begin, but I do know how I want it to feel.

My first question for you isn’t, “What colors do you like?”

It’s, “How do you want to feel when you look at the finished piece?”

How an Intuitive Painting Begins

  1. 01

    Tell Me What Matters.

You might come to me with your wedding song, a playlist you have listened to a thousand times, a relationship that changed you, or an idea for the life you want to create next.

These ideas become color, texture, and form.

  2. 02

We Talk About The Emotions Evoked.

I’ll ask questions. Some will be practical, like the size of the painting, where it will live, and whether there are colors you love or absolutely cannot stand.

And then we get into stuff that matters most: What does this person bring out in you? What does this song remind you of? Why do you love that particular movie? What do you hope you feel when you walk past this painting five years from now?

This will help me as I translate feelings, art, or relationships into art.

  3. 03

    Then I Create.

Once I begin to create, intuition takes over.

I work primarily in acrylic, watercolor, alcohol ink, acrylic ink, and cold wax, often layering heavy texture with fluid techniques. I favor dimension and paintings that shift slightly depending on where you stand or how the light hits them.

Eventually, your feelings, memories, and stories become something you can See, Feel, and Hold Close.

Commission

Art Your Playlist

Music has always looked like color to me.

Since I was a young girl, I have been able to close my eyes while listening to a song and see color moving through it. A song might begin turquoise, melt into orange and pink, and then suddenly a dark navy bursts in. Another might feel almost entirely green until one stanza changes everything.

Send me one song that matters deeply to you, or a playlist of up to ten songs. I listen with my eyes closed, pay attention to what I see and how the music moves, then create an original abstract painting from that experience.

I am not painting an album cover or illustrating the lyrics. I am painting my visual experience of the music.

People have commissioned wedding songs, meaningful playlists, and music connected to specific seasons of their lives.

Playlist paintings are another way to keep your favorite music close.

Commission Something Personal

A commission can begin with someone you love, someone you lost, a relationship you are still trying to understand, or a version of yourself you want to remember.

It can begin with a dream, a place, or simply a feeling you want to hold onto.

That’s all you need to start.

TEN

Ten Relationships. Ten Paintings. Ten-Song Playlists. Ten Essays About What I Learned.

Hallowed Deep — soft turquoise field with raised copper marks drifting across it

We are changed by what we love.

We are changed by what leaves, what we lose, and what brings us joy.

Relationships have a way of rearranging us.

The TEN Series is my interpretation of love, loss, joy, and grief.

This is my most vulnerable body of work. In some ways, it has become an autobiography.

Painting Found Me When I Got Sick.

Kendra Malloy in her studio surrounded by paints and canvases

At the end of 2016, I got really sick.

By mid January 2017, I was mostly bedridden and felt I had two choices: I could sit around and binge Netflix, or I could teach myself something new.

A few weeks earlier, at Christmas, my two-year-old niece had handed me a paintbrush. When I took it from her, I felt a jolt of energy travel up my arm. It was memorable enough that when I started thinking about what I might teach myself, painting was the first thing that came to mind.

I started watching abstract painting techniques on YouTube and decided to try it all: colored pencils, acrylic paints, fluid paints, watercolor, crayons.

I taught myself by making often very terrible things.

But somewhere along the way, I developed my own method for combining heavy texture with fluid paint. I also began translating other forms of art into painting: fashion, music, photography, movies, sculpture.

I realized I could paint a dress, a photograph, a sculpture, Adagio in G Minor.

Painting gave me a new way to metabolize life.

What Matters To You?

Maybe there is a song you have loved for twenty years.

Maybe somebody changed your life, and you have never quite known what to do with everything that relationship meant.

Maybe you are standing at the beginning of something new and want a piece of art that reminds you what you hoped for when you started.

Tell me about it.

Let’s figure out what it looks like.

Turn what matters into art you can see, feel, and hold close.
